Before the advent of the Pan de Pugons, Goldilocks, and even Gardenia, we Filipinos get our fill of baked goods from our neighborhood bakeries.

Neigborhorhood bakeries or affectionately called "potpot" bakeries by some, (because of the "potpot" sound done by the horn of the bakery delivery men) are still around and can be found in almost every street corner. The smell that wafts from these places are so amazing especially in the morning one can't help but buy from them.

So what are the best buys one can actually purchase from these bakeries? Let's share and reminisce the glory days of these wonderful local shops!

I love the smell of pandesal in the morning. I like it especially toasted or "tostado" with a spread of butter or a piece of kesong puti sandwiched in between. We get our fill of pandesal from our neigborhood bakeshop just one block away from our house but we have to be super early like 6am or else no more pandesal. :(

Another item I love in our neighborhhod bakery is the pan de regla. It's named as such because the red filling in the bread kinda resembles the woman's monthly visitor. :p Despite the ghastly name, it is quite good.

I like the custard cake that is found in bakeries. You know the chiffon/mamon like cake with the leche flan on top? It's really delicious.

Pandesal. Even though the name isn't ours the pandesal is the most famous Filipino bread. It reflects our economy as well. If you see a P 1.00 pandesal that is big then that means that the Philippine economy is good. Enough about economics. Pandesal is the best match for coffee in my book.

I like 'pandesal putok' especially if its hot. Best paired with brewed coffee or hot choco.:D

I only know pandesal as the most favorite cheap bread in bakeries. I guess in the Philippines, you will not be a bakery if your products doesn't include pandesal

Yup, yours is not a bakery if you don't sell Pandesal here in the Philippines. It won't sell like other bakeries. Why? Almost 80% of Filipinos eat Pandesal for breakfast so if you don't have one you are missing that 80% in the morning for sales. Haha.

Definitely Pan de Sal. Back in college, I buy pan de sal then buy kesong puti for a breakfast with my roommates. This is after a quick run in the fields.

Oh yes, the neighborhood bakery won't be the same without pandesal. In fact, it is true that because it is a super staple in every Filipino's diet, we measure our economy by how much the pandesal costs!

I even remember that the pandesal association of the philippines (i dunno if that is the real name but there is one) actually issued a press statement when they had to raise the price of the pandesal to P2.00 and people actually protested!

Well, that just means we really do love our pandesal.

I like pandesals when they are baked using the pugon method (wood fired oven). There is a certain aroma that comes from the wood that transfers to the pandesal. It's really delicious especially with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the morning.

Another great buy in neighborhood bakeries is the spanish bread. I don't know why they are called as such but these elongated sweet breads filled with a sugary buttery filling is a definite hot seller for me.

Sometimes, I'd rather buy spanish bread than pandesal because it's more delicious!

Lambingan is a type of bread that I actually enjoyed when I was a kid but just learned what the name was like last week.

It's two pieces of round sweet bread with a sweet butter filling in between and a kind of like grated coconut sprinkled on top. I love it dipped in either orange juice or iced tea.

I love to buy egg pie too. =) Aside from my favorite pan de sal of course. Jericho's bakery has a very good pan de sal. Definitely yummy.

Egg pie. Would you believe I haven't tasted an actual egg pie? Is it like Lord Stow's?

I used to always buy Spanish Bread from a nearby bakery. Sadly, the place closed down a few years back. :( I haven't found the 'right' Spanish Bread ever since.

I don't know what you actually look for in Spanish breads but one spanish bread that definitely hits the spot for me is the one sold in Fortune Bakeshop. It is a bit big and very generous with the butter creamy inside. It is also crispy on the outside but soft in the inside so it's really good! :)

Pandesal. I think next to rice that's a staple food for Filipinos.
