The University of the Philippines (UP) is the premier university in the Philippines and its Diliman Campus is its flagship.

Anyway, being an Isko/Iska means you know how to look for the best places to eat whether on a tight budget or on a celebration mode for getting a 1.0 grade on that dratted Math 17. And in the Diliman campus and the nearby Kalayaan, Katipunan, and Commonwealth Avenues, there's plenty of it to choose from.

So let's pick our top 5 best places to eat in or near UP Diliman. This will be a great guide for those who plan to, are about to, or are already studying in UP as well as those who just want to visit and reminisce the good old days of the Diliman life.

1) Beach House (near the Main Library) - definitely the best pound for pound barbecue. And with the combination of salted egg, tomatoes, leche flan, and a bottle of sprite, it's a winner!

2) Chocolate Kiss (located in Bahay ng Alumni) - the date place. the best dish for me here is the chicken ala kiev coupled with their bottomless iced tea. When people have money, this is the place to go

3) SR Thai (somewhere near Cravings in Katipunan Avenue) - My first venture into Thai food. Great value for money because of the size. Known for their bagoong rice and seafood rice

4) Rodics (UP Shopping Center) - the house that tapsilog built. Rodic's has one of the best tapsilogs I've ever tasted. The tapa is shredded and is sweet and salty. Add plenty of chili flakes and vinegar and this is definitely a winner!

5) Mang Larry's Isawan (across Kalayaan Dormitory) - cannot argue with the taste of this man's innard concoctions. At P3 a pop (around $.06), definitely a steal.

I have not been to UP.

You should go! :) It's definitely a good place to explore not only for the food but for the history of academic freedom in the Philippines. :)

UP food avenue was featured in one of our local tv shows. The store that caught my eye was the barbecue grill. From the looks of it, it tastes really good.. Ahh... I can even taste it. Also the store with Unlimited rice haha or they call it there "Eat All You Kanin"

The only place I can remember near UP that is legendary for the unlimited rice is Mang Jimmy's. This is the birth place of the tapa mix and the unlimited rice as far as I'm concerned. And this is also the place where one can get a +1 meal (meaning if you order 2 viands, you get a third viand free!) Perfect for big appetites and tight allowances.

I still recall the time I managed to down three plates of rice in one sitting at Mang Jimmy's because the sisig and tapa mix were so good! :)

Chateau Verde is also a nice place to eat in UP Diliman. Located near the UP shopping center, it offers a fine dining experience in a garden setting. This is where intellectuals, artists, and the who's who of the political and academic world meet and dine.

What I particularly like in Chateau Verde is the mango and shrimp salad. Light, tasty, tangy, and sweet, it was a perfect meal to complete my dining experience in this place.

I used to spend a lot of time in Casaa and just fill up on the fresh fruit shakes that they sell there. The flavors are dalandan, watermelon, and mango shakes and they juice it right in front of you.

Oh yes, I do remember those shakes in Casaa. What I liked there though was the big siomai that you pair with a cup of rice for only P20! That was one of the cheapest but filling meals I've ever had in my life!

Thank you Casaa for making my student life budget friendly.

I have friends from UP and they always bring me to Chocolate Kiss (inside Bahay ng Alumni). It's the only restaurant I've ever been to in UP. I love their iced tea with honey. Rodic's is nice too, but I've never been to the branch in UP since there's a stall in our school.

The iced tea in chocolate kiss is delicious! I think it is actually brewed iced tea. :) Anyway, better try their Chicken Ala Kiev as well as their Beef Stroganof, Seafood Pomodoro, and Adobo Flakes. They are my absolute favorites in the place. :)

I am regular around UP but I've never really went around to try food. This is very helpful. In UP alone, there are many food stalls to choose from and I believe that visiting UP offers a whole lot Filipino food-tripping experience than going to any other place.

I suggest you try ChocKiss at the back of Bahay ng Alumni. Their cakes are really delicious looking, and of course the taste is very commendable. I also like their iced tea. If your a little low on the budget, you can try eating in Lutong Bahay or Lutong Kapitbahay near Shopping Center.
