The Filipinos or “Pinoys” just love to eat. For me, sometimes it’s more than a necessity. It could mean bonding time among friends or just a simple craving that I want to satisfy. Street foods can be found on almost every corner and I can’t help but be tempted to buy. Despite the fact that it’s out there, a little dirt won’t be too dangerous, right? Haha!:p
Here are some of my favorite street foods:
FISH BALLS, SQUID BALLS, KIKIAM
A variety of fried bite-size “dumplings” that you can eat using a stick. Take your pick for the sauce: sweet, sweet and sour, or spicy vinegar. Five pesos of fish balls could satisfy me! Sometimes I enjoy it more when there are a lot of buyers and I have to compete for the cooked ones. Haha!

KWEK KWEK
This is quail eggs dipped in orange-colored coating and then fried to perfection. Usually 2 pesos each. Sometimes it is sold alongside the fish balls.

GREEN MANGOES
Ahh..one of my favorites! Sliced mangoes are held on a stick. You can choose between salt and bagoong (shrimp paste) as its topping.

Waah! That's a close-up picture of balut! Haha! I just want the yellow part and the bato or white part. I prefer penoy. It's also the duck egg but there's no formed chick inside yet. Best eaten with yummy vinegar and ice-cold soda. This is usually sold at night. Yum!

I think the road icecream is aka dirty ice cream. BUt it's not really dirty. It's just that it's not the usual commercialized ones. Sometimes it's sold via pushcart, others via bike.
My fave flavor is cheese!

I love kwek kwek! A big fan of fishball too. I like the vinegar with chili dip best amongst the three dips. What about you guys?
They say that UP has the best fishballs but I still prefer Katipunan ;)

A lot of people I've talked to claims that UP has the best fishballs but I don't really think it's anything great - my sister and I still debate about this lol. I just like the taste of the sauce in Katipunan. =)
Where is Gastambide?

I tried isaw once and I didn't like it. Not for meee!!!
By the way, for foreigners and people who have sensitive stomach and do not dare buy balut, penoy, and kwek kwek out on the street, there are food carts in the mall and on some train stations that actually sell 'em.

But of course, to experience street food on the street would be better.

It's like halo-halo without the fruits. Mostly made of shaven ice with artificial flavoring. I tried it before and it tasted good. :D

Yup, it's shaved ice with powdered concentrate---usually it's pink or yellow-colored .They top it with powdered millk and chocolate syrup. Only about 5-10 pesos per cup.

Why is there no chicharon here? I LOVE CHICHARON!!! For me, definitely Filipino. R.Lapids refer to it as Manila's french fries... love it. love the idea also. And it's my favorite topping for another Filipino delicacy, PALABOK. Other known as Pancit Luglog.

Me, too. I think it's called dirty ice cream coz it's sold out on the streets. The typical ice cream is bought in a grocery, right? But as for me, when I hear the bell of the Manong selling ice cream, I run towards the gate and call his attention. I love the cheese flavor! (Other flavors are ube, chocolate, mango....)

Has anyone heard of buro? Burong mangga, burong singkamas, burong santol... One of the street foods that I look forward to whenever I visit my hometown.
'Buro' is 'preserved' in English. Salt, sugar and water is used as preservative instead of harmful chemicals. Fruits will last for a week or two and its original flavor is still there.

Among the ones you mentioned, burong manga is my favorite. You can even do it at home yourself! Just peel your green mangoes, cut it in bite size, place it in a small glass jar filled with water and salt. Let it sit for a week or two. Not only will you still have your mangoes quite sour but you also have sawsawan or dip to your favorite salty dishes like tuyo or danggit since the water will turn sour-salty! It can even last longer if you place it in the ref.
My mom is from Pampanga and she just loves buring isda. It's got fish, some rice, and can be eaten with the green leafy vegetable mustasa (I don't know the English term sorry!). I tried this only once. It's quite sour!

One thing I love so much is the isaw! Check out Mang Larry's isaw stand in UP Diliman (just across the Kalayaan Dormitory Hall). Mang Larry's isaw is a legend already in UP. It's flavorful, grilled just right, and with a vinegar sauce that complements it really well.
One only has to look at the lines that form every 5:00 pm when it opens to see gauge how delicious this isaw is.

Yes, the turon in UP Casaa (the canteen of UP Diliman's College of Arts and Sciences) is legendary. It's big and full of saba and langka inside. The last price I remember is P10 ($.2) so it's value for money food apart from being delicious. :)
If into the petite kind of turon, there is one in Marikina that I cannot remember the name of. The turon is small but it is coated with toasted sesame seeds and caramelized sugar for another level of flavor and crunch. Definitely a must for turon lovers. I'll try to secure the name of the person who makes it coz right now I really can't remember. :(

Another round of street foods I enjoyed especially when I was in college were the carioca and the taho. Carioca is a sweet sticky something that is usually skewered on a stick in 3's while taho is soft tofu mixed with caramel and tapioca.
I love these two especially for merienda. My suki for taho is the one in front of UP CBA while the carioca is the one in front of UP AS.
